The Chinese Character biáng, 57 strokes

The compound Chinese characters may take some time for learning and memorizing. How can the learning process be speeded up?

The answer is: the analysis and understanding of the Chinese characters which consist of multiple number of components and strokes.

As a plain example let us take the Chinese character biáng – noodle, how it might be learnt and memorized the soonest possible.

The Chinese character biáng, 57 strokes, includes eleven main components:

穴, 言, 幺, 幺, 馬, 長, 長, 月, 刂, 心, 辶,

  1. 穴 xué,  cave – 5 strokes,
  2. 言 yán,  speech – 7 strokes,
  3. 幺 yāo,  short thread – 3 strokes,
  4. 幺 yāo,  short thread – 3 strokes,
  5. 馬 mǎ,  horse – 10 strokes,
  6. 長 cháng,  long – 8 strokes,
  7. 長 cháng,  long – 8 strokes,
  8. 月 yuè,  moon – 4 strokes,
  9. 刂 dāo,  knife – 2 strokes,
  10. 心 xīn,  heart – 4 strokes,
  11. 辶 chuò,  walk – 3 strokes,

Combination of the main components creates five rarely used Chinese characters:

迌,  悥,  刖,  脹,  這,

  1. 迌 tù,  crafty,
  2. 悥 yì,  old synonym for  念  niàn,  read,
  3. 刖 yuè,  cutting off feet as a form of punishment,
  4. 脹 zhàng,  swell,
  5. 這 zhè,   this, these,

Such thorough analysis creates the so called ‘small islands of associations’ between a compound character and the Chinese radicals.

In the future each time when one needs to write a compound Chinese character, the memory will automatically refer to these ‘small islands of associations’ for help and correct writing.
